Joanna Boateng is a BAFTA and RTS winning producer and BAFTA Breakthrough filmmaker. In 2021 she produced UPRISING, a three-part saga exploring three key events in 1981 and how they affected race relations in Britain, directed by Steve McQueen and James Rogan. Previous credits include, the 2021 Netflix feature documentary NAILBOMBER: MANHUNT and GRENFELL for BBC ONE. Her work centres marginalised communities with nuance and depth.
In 2022, she was nominated for two BAFTA awards for UPRISING and NAILBOMBER: MANHUNT with UPRISING taking home the BAFTA for best documentary series.
The following year, she was named a BAFTA Breakthrough along with 32 other creatives in the UK and US.
Joanna has been invited to join the jury for the BAFTA film awards documentary category and the Grierson Awards; is a full voting member of BAFTA.
Her latest film, BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL will have its world premiere in competition at London Film Festival in 2025 before it’s festival run.
